Volunteer with us ...

Our volunteers help keep our organization vibrant. Check the list below to see if one of our volunteer opportunities matches your schedule and your interests.

Stewardship Work Parties

On the 3rd Saturday of each month, we plan volunteer stewardship work parties at a specific preserve to clear and mark trails, create new trails, clear storm- or age-damaged trees and vegetation, manage invasive vegetation, pick up trash, or maintain/build footbridges.

Work party details are emailed to Land Trust contacts (sign up using the Subscribe Now box at the bottom of this page) and posted on the website home page under Outings & Events. For more information or to volunteer contact stewardship@ehlt.org.

Trail Monitors

Do you hike at an East Haddam Land Trust preserve? If so, consider signing up as a Trail Monitor to report to your assigned Stewardship Team member any conditions needing work. If you choose to take on additional tasks - removal of small fallen branches, cutting back intruding small vines, briars, or branches, and removing trash - the Land Trust will provide guidance on how to safely and properly do so.

If interested please email trail.monitor@ehlt.org

Fill Trailhead Map Boxes

We need one or two individuals willing to keep the map boxes at the preserve trailhead supplied with maps. If you are interested in helping with this task, email stewardship@ehlt.org.

Bird Box Monitoring and Maintenance

We have an increasing number of bird nesting boxes at our preserves. These require regular monitoring to keep vegetation from growing on the posts, observe the bird box inhabitants, and clean out the boxes once they are abandoned. Contact Steve.Dedman@ehlt.org if interested in helping.

Preserve History Research

Help us learn more about the history of the land EHLT now preserves so we can share it with others. Some EHLT preserves were sites of working mills or farms that reverted to woodlands, and many are bordered or crisscrossed with stone walls or have other stone structures. If history speaks to you and you are intrigued by historical research, contact president@ehlt.org to discuss how your interest can help us all learn more about our preserved open spaces.

Plan an activity or lead a hike or paddle

Do you have a skill or interest you can share with others about native plants and trees, geology, insects, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals, invasive plants, fungi, moss and lichen, edible plants, vernal pools, pond and stream life, orienteering, or any other outdoor or nature-related craft or childrens' activity? Email president@ehlt.org with your interest/skill and activity idea.

Be an Event Volunteer

EHLT hosts and plans an annual Musical Bridges outdoor concert, the Goodwin Trail Challenge, and other events each year. Volunteers are always appreciated to help with the many tasks required to make events fun and successful. Email Pete.Govert@ehlt.org to learn more.

Corporate Volunteer Matching Programs

These programs donate dollar amounts for each hour an employee or retiree volunteers to a nonprofit organization. If you volunteer with our stewardship team, trail monitor program, or otherwise, such a program can increase your impact by earning dollars that benefit EHLT’s mission.

Please check with your human resources department or employee engagement portal to see if your employer offers a volunteer matching program.
